“Designing a WordPress Theme From Scratch

A lot of people are martyrs and want to get their hands in the dirt and design their own WordPress Theme from scratch. That’s okay. I did that, and then got smarter. Let’s start with the smarter choice.

First, find a WordPress Theme architecture that you like, be it one or two sidebars, or no header, or whatever you want. Forget about the colors, graphics, and fonts. Just concentrate on the layout. If nothing pleases you, then I recommend you try the new Sandbox Theme, another great way to start your WordPress Theme from scratch.

Download a couple of Themes you like and put them through their paces on your test site. Do you like the way the single post looks different from the front page, category, and archive pages? If not, try another. If yes, then it’s time to start to work.
Copy your chosen Theme to a new folder with a different folder name under your wp-content/themes folder. Open the style.css style sheet file in a Text Editor and rename the header section at the top to something different, like “My Test Theme” or “Ripping and Tearing”. Just give it a different name. Depending upon how much you will end up modifying the Theme, you can either leave the author credit inside or not, it’s up to you and the copyright terms of the WordPress Theme.

Upload the new Theme Folder to your website. From within the Administration Panels, under Presentation, find the new Theme and activate it. You now have a test Theme to work with.

If you aren’t worried about bandwidth on your website or your Internet connection, you can style your site right on the Internet. If you are worried, then use the “Sandbox” method.

Get familiar with your site’s layout and structure by checking the source code and the style sheet, and begin your modifications one at a time.

I recommend that you backup your test Theme folder frequently as you go, in case you make a big mess and you need to go back, but not to start over.

Determined to Start from Total Scratch
If you are determined to redesign your WordPress Theme from scratch, you probably already know how to do this. Still, I’m here to help WordPress users and so here are some things you need to know if you are going to design your WordPress Theme from scratch.

One of the best tools recently developed for web page designers is found in the Firefox Internet Browser. Called the Firefox Web Developer Extension, it allows amazing WYSIWYG on the screen live editing of the style sheets of any web page. And a whole lot more. You will also need a good text editor to edit the WordPress Templates. For a list of those recommended by WordPress users, see Text Editors in the WordPress Codex.

Also, seriously consider using the “Sandbox” method for designing your style sheet and Theme.

Here is a very simple step-by-step process to start to design your own WordPress Theme from scratch.

Using either the Default or Classic WordPress Themes, generate a test post in your browser.
Copy the ID and class selectors and HTML tags from the top to the bottom of the site into a Text Editor page. This is the list of the architectural features you can change, also known as your style sheet. You can also find a fairly complete listing of all the styles in most WordPress Themes on the WordPress Codex in Site Architecture 1.5.
If necessary, add selectors to the sections lacking them, like each of the template tags that generate different lists within the sidebar and/or footer. These need to be added to the various modular template files within the test Theme folder.
Different tags may appear on different views of your test Theme. Be sure and check the pages generated by the front page, category, archives, search, single, and Page views to find more selectors and tags.
When you have your list finished, then save it and call it style.css, replacing the style sheet that came with the Theme.
Start applying styles to the various structural HTML tags, ID and class selectors within the style.css.”

WordPress raubt mir heute mal wieder die letzten Nerven. Eigentlich wollte ich mit der WP MU Installation für einen Kunden schon längst fertig sein, doch nach einem automatischem Update gehen alle Funktionen auf Basis von Javascript nicht mehr.

Die Firefox Fehlerkonsole meldet mir einen jQuery Fehler, also überschreibe ich die komplette jQuery Bibliothek auf dem Server. Doch denkste, das geht nicht. Ein Tipp von Oren Yomtov hat mr geholfen:“jQuery is not defined” WordPress Error Fix.

Offenbar habe ich einen fehler mit einem anderen Fehler überschrieben. Erst das komplette löschen des wp-includes\js Folders und erneute Aufspielen brachten den gewünschten Erfolg…

Merke: Auch beim FTP-Upload kann es zu Übertragungsfehlern kommen!

Immer wieder bleibe ich nach einer WordPress Installation bei der automatischen Updatefunktion mit der Fehlermeldung: “WordPress Verzeichnis kann nicht gefunden werden.” hängen.
Diese nichts aussagende Fehlermeldung hat den Hintergrund, dass WordPress nicht weiß wohin mit den temporären Files die für das Update benötigt werden.

Abhilfe schafft folgende Vorgehensweise:

• erstelle ein Verzeichns /wp-content/tmp
• ergänze die wp-config um folgende Zeilen (Danke an Tobias Redmann – Fehler beim Update in WordPress 2.8)

1. putenv(‘TMPDIR=’. $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] .’/wp-content/tmp’);
2. define(‘WP_TEMP_DIR’, ABSPATH . ‘wp-content/tmp’);

Nun sollte das Update aus dem Admin heraus funktionieren.
Weshhalb die Pfade mit den entsprechenden Rechten und die Einträge in der wp-config nicht schon bei der Installation erstellt werden, ist mir ein Rätsel…

Nachdem ich nun das Problem mit dem WordPress Plugin Simple Tags gelöst hatte gab’s gleich das nächste Problem nach einem automatischem Update.
Call to undefined function get_file_data() in /var/www/meine-domain/public_html/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 81
Offenbar geht hier bei der Installation etwas schief und FIles sind nicht die, die sie sein sollten. EInfach den wp-admin Ordner einmal mit der neuen Version überschreiben per FTP.
Das sollte es dann gewesen sein!

Leider arbeitet das von mir in jeder WordPress Installation verwendete Plugin Simple Tags nicht mit den aktuelellen WordPress Versionen ab 2.9.0 zusammen. Der Author hat das Plugin am 22.04.09 das letzte mal geupdatet.
Doch es gibt einen Workaround der die hartcodierte Versionsabfrage für die 2.9.x Versionen fitt macht :

Diesen Codschnipsel hier suchen:
if ( strpos($wp_version, '2.7') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.8') !== false) {
und durch diesen hier ersetzen:
if ( strpos($wp_version, '2.7') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.8') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.9') !== false ) {

Fertig!

Lange gab es keine Updates für WordPress, doch wer sich heute in eines seine WordPress Blogs einloggte bemerkte es
WordPress 2.8.5 ist da und es handelt sich um ein Sicherheitsupdate!

Oje, kaum habe ich hier das Update 2.8.2, was auf diesem Server nun endlich auch automatisiert funktioniert, da kommt über Twitter die Meldung dass es mal wieder eine Sicherheitslücke in WordPress gibt! Das riecht mal wieder nach viel Arbeit!

Manchmal steht man vor dem Problem auf die Schnelle ein ‘quick and dirty’ WordPress Theme zu benötigen, wenn ein Standard Template

So jedenfalls ging es mir heute und ich bin bei der Suche über den Artikel Top 5 WordPress Theme Generatoren – ein anderer Weg zu Ihrem eigenen kostenlosen Blog Design gestoßen und habe dann den WordPress Theme Gen ausprobiert und ich muss sagen das Ergebnis ist ok! Nunja, man muss hier und dort ein bisschen nacharbeiten, aber es reicht auf jedenfall für eine Arbeitsgrundlage.

Mein Tipp für faule Viel-Wordpresser. Downloaden!

P.S. Falls die Authorin des o.g. Artikels mitliest: Die Kommentarfunktion ist fehlerhaft -> weiße Seite (fatal PHP Error vermute ich mal). Ich wollte einen Hinweis zu einem defekten Link hinterlassen!

Wer das Partnercash RSS Feed Import Plugin verwendet und bereits mit WP 2.8 unterwegs ist sollte dies updaten. In der aktuellen Version SimplePie auf v1.1.3 aktualisiert, weil es Problem unter WP 2.8 gegeben hat!

Macht man sich auf die Suche nach einer praktikablen Lösung um Links aus der WordPress Blogroll zu exportieren, so findet man erstmal nicht sehr viel, bis auf Peruns Beitrag zu “Blogroll aus WordPress exportieren”.
Das Ganze ist natürlich nicht sehr komfortabel, aber dafür praktikabel.
Ich hab’s folgendermaßen gemacht, weil ich 3 Linkkategorien zum exportieren hatte:

• rufe Deine wp-links-opml.php auf
• speichere die Datei im XML-Format (Backup)
• splitte die Datei nach Kategorien und speichere sie mit passendem Namen (Kategorienname)
• importiere die Datei unter Werkzeuge -> Import in deiner Wunschkategie
• fertig!
Das wird mir in Zukunft wieder jede Menge Arbeit sparen! Ich liebe solche Automatismen!

Apropos Automatismen: Falls jemand weiß, wie man die automatische Updatefunktion von WP wieder zum laufen bekommt mit dieser Fehlermeldung, wäre ich sehr dankbar!
